FIRE OVER THE BLACK HILL

'Fire Over The Black Hill' was the very first print I ever sold, it went to a new block of offices in London. Since then I have been lucky enough to have sold this print to 3 states in America and to a lady that once lived in Hay on Wye but now lives in Spain.

I remember taking this photograph, it was around 5.00pm in late November 2009. We had already had quite a lot of snowfall by then, but more and worse was to follow over the next few weeks.

The photograph was taken from a field just off Urishay Common looking towards the Black Hill. The sun had just set and the colours were just amazing.

There has been a little amount of work done to the sunset in Photoshop, but even the original was quite an image too.

PURPLE GRAZE

For quite some time this was one of my favourite and best selling pieces. It took me many an early, cold morning to get this image just as I wanted it.

It was early October 2009, and every morning for about a week, for just about five minutes, the fog that rose up from the Escley Brook cloaked the field just above. As usual, every morning, the sky was grey and very dull, making it almost impossible to use the camera.

Then one morning, the sky was clear and the sun had just started to rise up over Urishay Common and I was even lucky enough to have sheep grazing in the field just above the fog. The colours in the sky were just amazing as you can see. After printing ten prints of this image, I sold 4 within the first week of it being on sale on the website.

BLUE

Now believe it or not, but this old boy was still working up until last year (2010), but for some unknown reason, the farmer just cannot seem to get him going again.

This was taken in the summer of 2010, near Michaelchurch Escley.

WHITE ON THE BLACK HILL

Although living in such a rural location can have some troubles during certain months of the year, it can boast amazing views too.

This image was processes in January 2010. A particular bad year for snow and ice, even the locals commented on the conditions being the worse they had seen for quite some years.

Then, whats a few months of bad weather????

FROM URISHAY CASTLE

This was the first image that I had published in the 'Herefordshire Life' magazine. I submitted the image to the magazine as they were looking for images that 'best described the countryside where you live'. I thought that this piece said it all. Stunning views, rolling hills and farming.

THE CROWN INN. LONGTOWN

Where to start with this public house is really hard!!

It really is one of the friendliest, welcoming, warm public houses within the Golden Valley. Amazing food, amazing ales and amazing service.

SILENT IN THE FOG

During bad weather it is difficult to take a good photograph. If it is raining, there is a risk to your equipment, foggy, there is a chance of getting moisture in your lens.
For these reasons, I have never really used my camera in these conditions, but if you are lucky, and quick, sometimes you can use the fog to your advantage.

This was taken in December 2010 just off Urishay Common. There was total silence, not a bird whistling, no farm equipment, not even any breeze in the air. It was quite a moment.

ST. MICHAELS & ALL THE ANGELS

The attractive Church in Ewyas Harold dominates the village and is the central Church of this group, or benefice. Its massive 13th century tower was originally detached and is evocative of the need for a secure refuge in troubled times along the English-Welsh border.

STORMY SKIES OVER HAY BLUFF

Hay Bluff shadows Hay on Wye and is also where many people enjoy hang gliding from. Only once have I managed to reach the very top, though I have tried many times before.

OLD KATE

I think there really is something beautiful when the sun rises early on a spring morning. The dew on the grass and the birds all busy collecting or feeding their chicks.

Old Kate is a Badger Faced Ewe from Llanrosser. I am sure that she was either lost or had broken free of the rest of the flock, but she stood there, in the field with the early morning sun shining through the woodland behind here, quite happy.

HAY BLUFF MARCH 2011

Hay Bluff really is a favourite place of mine to walk with my camera. It looks differnt every five minutes or so. With the light and then in summer the colour of the heathers, it really is an awe inspiring.

This was taken in March 2011, just as the snow and ice started to melt.

PLOUGHING

It always amazes me how after a farmer has ploughed through his field, turning up all the soil, after harvest, the field just seems to grow back as flat as ever with lush green grass.

This was taken late in the spring 2010 on the Urishay Common Road.

DINGLE VIEW

These Hawthorns are very old indeed. They line a dingle just off Urishay Common on the route to Llanrosser.
I like this image as it seems to draw your eyes down through the picture.

THE TUMP

I have always loved this hill. The image was taken from the foot of Hay Bluff looking over towards Hay on Wye.

CAPEL Y FFIN BARN

Capel Y Ffin is another favourite place of mine to go out with the camera. Everytime I visit, I seem to find something different to look at. It really is a beautiful area of the Golden Valley.

Finn Valley

This is the valley looking from the north down the valley with Hay Bluff behind me. I love the way that the mountains in the valley seem lighter in colour the further away they are.

Couple of Cows

This bunch of girls looked at me as if I was the very first person they had ever seen. They stood there looking at me for ages, and then all followed me until I was out of site.
